James Monroe - 1817-1825
-Monroe's election in 1816 begins the "Era of Good Feelings"
-Ends the Virginia Dynasty by choosing John Q Adams as his Secretary of State
-The Seminole War of 1817 is used as an excuse to invade Florida
-Eventually, Florida is ceded to the United States in 1819
-The panic of 1819 begins, in 1819 of course, when the national bank begins tightening credit for land speculators
-The Missouri compromise, under which territories north of the 36 degree 30' parallel will be admitted as free states, is passed in 1819.
-Dartmouth College v. Woodward is heard in 1819
-McCulloch v. Maryland is heard in 1819
-Cohens v. Virginia is heard in 1821
-Johnson v. McIntosh is heard in 1823
-Gibbons v. Ogden is heard in 1824
-The Monroe Doctrine, which states that American nations are the ultimate power on American continents, is issued in 1823
