Definition of Citizenship
The fourteenth amendment was created shortly after the thirteenth, in order to continue the process of freeing slaves. Those slaves had been denied citizenship until the passage of this amendment, which defines a citizen as, "All persons born or naturalized in the United States." In addition, sections II through IV contained stipulations limiting the rights of all those who engaged in rebellion against the United States.
