Dartmouth College v. Woodward (1819)
In 1819, the new Republican majority in the New Hampshire state legislature tried to change the charter of Dartmouth College to a public university. The University resisted, and the case came before the Supreme Court. The court ruled in favor of Dartmouth, once again affirming the inviolability of contracts as well as limiting the ability of government to interfere with businesses.
